2011 World University Games Final Update

Final Day:


The recurve men and women competed in the individual elimination matches.  Elizabeth Didan won her first match against Kathleen Joy Bartolo of the Phillipines. Glen Thomas won his first match as well.  Kayla DeBord lost her first match to Mei Sugawara of Japan. Lyndsey Marzec lost her first match to Jessica Tomasi of Italy.  In the next match, Glen shot against Joe Fanchin also of Team USA.  Fanchin won the match. In the 16th's Fanchin won his match against Kumar from India but lost in the 1/8ths to B. Kim, the number one ranked seed from Korea losing the opportunity for the recurve archers to win any medals. 

 

On Thursday, Team USA competed in the final two matches of the competition with Zach Plannick and Kendal Nicely shooting for Gold in the Mixed Compound team round losing 11 to 14 to Korea. The Men's Compound team won their final match against Korea to win Bronze.

 

The team returns to the U.S. on Friday having represented the USA and USCA in an outstanding manner.  Congratulations to all the team members and thanks to our volunteer staff Kacey Eggers, Benton Christensen, and Brad Fiala.  We couldn't have done it without you!


Day 2:


Nicely wins first Team USA medala in Archery


Today (Tues) the compound men and women competed in the Individual elimination matches.  The competition is conducted on at 50m on the 80cm 6-ring face.  For the compound men, Zach Plannick (Penn College) went outin the 1/8ths to Claudio Capoville (Ita), Adam Gallant then faced Capoville and lost his match 143 to 141 in the quarter finals,  and Adam Wruck (Texas A&M) lost to in the quarter finals toAlexander Danbaeur (Rus) 140 to 144.


In the women's compound, Elissa Falconer (Miami UnivI) tied with H. Kim (Kor) 138 to 138.  In a one arrow shoot off, Kim shot a 10 to Falconer's 8.   Tristan Skarvan (Texas A&M lost to XX.  Kendal Nicely (Univ of New England) gave up a three point lead to Palina Nikitiva (Rus) and ended up in a 138 to 138 tie.  In the tie breaker shootoff of 1 are per archer, Nicely shot first scoring a 9, with Nikitiva taking the Gold with a solid 10.  Nicely earned the silver medal, which is the first medal for Team USA.


The recurve men and women competed in the team round today.  The team round was conducted at 70m on the Academic target (hit/miss).  The recurve women shot 10 to Chinese Taipei's 16 hits while the men lost their round 13 to 22 to Chinese Taipei.


Tomorrow, the compound men and women will compete in team round while the recurve men and women will compete in the individual elimination matches.  The compound archers will compete at 50m on the Compound hit/miss target and the recurve archers will compete at 70m on the 122cm FITA face.  The men who are ranked 2nd will have a Bye for the first match, while the 6th seeded women will compete against number 5, Mexico.
