The winds were tricky and relentless all weekend at the BEN AVERY SHOOTING FACILITY in Phoenix, but that didn’t stop the college archers from giving it their best. The highlight of the tournament … JMU archers Braden Gellenthien and Brittany Lorenti took top honors in the Men’s and Women’s Compound Divisions.

Deadline to register is March 14th. Late registrations will be accepted with an additional fee and on a space available basis.
The CAP Western Regional Championships decides the best collegiate shooters from over 20 schools (PAC 10 and more). Last year, we had just under 100 CAP archers in attendance… this year should be even bigger.
Because the Ben Avery field is so large and there has been requeted interest… this year, we will section off a piece of the field for GUEST archers. Guests can shoot either a FITA (adult distances only… we don’t want to interfere with the AZ JOAD Champs going on that same weekend) or a 900 round. The 900 round is 60, 50, 40 meters at the large face - 30 arrows each distance. This is great for those newer archers (or the older crew) who may not be ready to shoot 90 or 70 meters.
This event is a STAR FITA, so it will count towards world records and USA Archery qualifying scores.
Pay attention to hotel reservation deadline dates as prices jump drastically if you miss them.
Keep in mind that the AAE/AZ Cup is the week before. April 9-13th. Anyone who would simply like to stay around may do so and practice with the ASU team at Papago (for free) or on their own at Ben Avery in the practice range ($5/day) between the two events.
Also, the 3rd leg of the Olympic Trials is shortly thereafter on the same field.
Registration forms and more are available at www.sundevilarchery.com

Congratulations to all college archers who participated! Being full-time students and competing is a lot of hard work and the results continue to show that College Archers are an integral part of USA Archery.

The Utah Fita Archers hosted one of the Western Regional Sites of the 2006 National Indoor Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah on 11-12 March. The tournament was well attended by the collegiate community and included archers from Arizona State University, Colorado State University, Dine’ College, Idaho State University, Saddleback College, Shoreline Community College, Stanford, University of Utah, University of Washington, and Utah State University. It was great to see so many of the college archers from the various schools hanging out together and having a good time. Several of the top ten finishers shot in Salt Lake City including:
Special congratulations to Lindsey Pian who took 1st place in both the Women’s Senior and College Recurve divisions.
Thanks go out to Larry and Randi Smith who put on a well-organized tournament and often finished the rounds earlier than scheduled. The judging was professional, the new target backing worked nicely, and the lighting was very good. It was a great venue for nationals, hope to see you all there next year!

California Archery (UC Berkeley Club) was formed in the Spring of 2005. The club has around 40 members and is a mix of men and women, pursuing a variety of majors. The predominant style of the club is Olympic recurve, with a few compound archers and a few barebow shooters.
Although a few members came to Berkeley with some archery experience, the majority learned after joining the club. Most of the club members are recreational shooters, but there is also a competitive team that travels to tournaments.
The club has an indoor (18m) range and an outdoor (70m) practice facility, shooting from home plate to center field on the baseball field, with full sized FITA target matts on campus, but also travels to local parks and private ranges to augment its practice times.
California Archery’s advisor is Professor Dennis K. Lieu (Mechanical Engineering), who usually practices with the competitive team, and also provides instruction to beginning archers.
The team will be traveling to Korea this summer to train for a week at the Korean National Sport University in Seoul. In July, Dr. Jinho Kim (former Olympic medalist and former world champion) will come to UC Berkeley, and stay for one to two years!

Embry-Riddle Archery Club was formed approximately three years ago. Today, under the leadership of Tina Blake, Embry-Riddle continues to grow as a club sport. There is a wide variety of archers shooting in the club: compound, recurve, and traditional. The goal is to be inclusive and welcome all types of archers. The current team is composed of both beginners and advanced archers. Many members of the club are new to the sport, having become aware of archery in college. Those just starting out have found a new hobby and a love in an old sport. The current club has approximately 25 members and is always ready to recruit more archers to the group. Dominated by male archers, the female membership is currently at five. Most students attending the university are pursuing Aeronautical science or aerospace engineering degrees. There are a few students majoring in intelligence studies as well.
The club practices at Mile High Archery in Prescott Valley, and recently received permission to practice in the university gym as well. For outdoor practice, the team will travel to North Phoenix.
ina Blake is not a new comer to the sport of archery. She has been shooting since the age of 12 and competed in the JOAD program. When she was in high school, she won the title for Arizona State Champion and competed in college at Arizona State University. After a ten-year break, Tina rekindled her interest in archery and started working with the students at Embry-Riddle.
The Golden Eagle Archers have yet to compete regionally or nationally but plan to attend some events during the 2005-2006 season, including the Arizona State Indoor and the State Outdoor Championships and hopefully the 2006 USIACs in San Diego.
